Oxford's new top cop is warning troublesome binge drinkers face a "no tolerance" policy from his officers.

Supt Brendan O'Dowda, 41, took the reigns as Oxford Commander this week from Chief Supt Jim Trotman, who has moved on after two years at the helm.

The father-of-four's first job was walking the beat in Oxford city centre and Cowley in 1984 and he has since worked his way up the ranks.

Supt O'Dowda set out his priorities for the city and warned revellers who step out of line and pubs, as well as clubs which attract trouble, are in his sights.

He said: "When I look at the increasing number of licensed premises in the city centre and Cowley Road area alcohol related violent crime is without doubt a big issue for me.

"Policing the night-time economy is a real problem and a real stretch of my resources.

"We will have no tolerance policing in terms of antisocial behaviour and alcohol-related crime because Oxford needs to be a good and safe place to live."

Police will be patrolling inside pubs and clubs and officers will be tackling problems on the routes drinkers and revellers use to get home where criminal damage frequently occurs.

Any licensed premises which steps out of line could also be closed down, Supt O'Dowda warned.

He said: "What my officers will not do is walk past and ignore incidents of antisocial behaviour."
