THE wheels are in motion for the stars of Oxford’s Roller Derby team as they try to raise thousands of pounds for a mental health charity.
Players of the full contact sport, which involves roller skaters known as ‘jammers’ attempting to score points by evading the opposing team’s ‘blockers’, will stage a ‘scrimmage’ on Saturday from 1.30pm for Oxfordshire Mind.
The charity event at the Leys Pools and Leisure Centre will feature a rookies game and an advanced players’ game as members of the club, which was founded in 2010, go head-to-head.
Money raised from tickets, a cake sale and raffle will be donated. Coach Amelia Jones said the team were hoping to smash the £2,000 collected at last years event.
