TODD Kane called for referee Christopher Sarginson to be sacked after the full back was penalised for a spot kick in Oxford United's defeat at AFC Wimbledon.

The on-loan Chelsea defender slipped in the 31st minute and Harry Forrester, who was behind him, tumbled.

Sarginson pointed to the spot and Lyle Taylor put the Dons in front.

Although Kane quickly equalised, former U's defender Jon Meades struck 19 minutes from time to inflict a 2-1 defeat which left United just four points above the relegation zone.

Afterwards Kane did not hold back. The 24-year-old claimed the referee had told him that after watching the footage at half-time he acknowledged it was not a penalty, but his comments could leave the defender in trouble with the authorities.

He said: "I said to the referee that I didn’t know what he saw.

"I slipped and the guy fell over me on the floor.

"At half-time before kick-off he said to me ‘I’ve watched it back, he fell over you’. It’s absolutely diabolical.

"Not even just the decision, the whole game – he needs to get fired from being a referee, if I’m honest.

"You can’t do anything about it.

"At half-time he made himself look like a bit of an idiot, coming up to us just before kick-off saying he had watched it back and he fell over you."

He added: "I’m not disrespecting him or anything, I’m just being honest.

"In a game like this he has to look back on it.

"Players look back on their performances and he has to look at his performance.

"If he keeps on refereeing like that it won’t be just me making those kind of comments.

"Maybe I’ve overreacted a little bit, but what he said at half-time made me quite frustrated."

Cameron Brannagan made his U's debut in the game and was also unhappy with the manner of the second goal.

He said: "Everyone in there is deflated, because it’s a rubbish goal to concede.

"If someone picks the ball up and hits it in from 25 yards, you’d say it’s a good goal.

"But (conceding from) a set piece is a pet hate.

"Everybody has to stay with their man, it’s an individual battle and that’s the annoying thing to lose the game that way. I’m fuming about it."
