Firefighters rescued a man from a burning house in Littlemore, Oxford, this morning.
Shorty before 7am they were called to the "very serious" fire in a flat at Thomson Terrace.
Crews from the Slade fire station went into the flat wearing breathing apparatus to rescue the man who was still inside at the time.
They carried him out to safety and gave first aid until he was handed over to paramedics.
A spokesman for South Central Ambulance service said two patients were treated for inhaling smoke, but their condition is not thought to be life-threatening.
He added: "We were on scene in five minutes after being called at 6.44am and two patients have been taken to hospital. They suffered quite serious smoke inhalation but their condition is not thought to be life-threatening."
Three fire engines and 15 firefighters were called to tackle the blaze. Specialist fire investigation officers are now working with the police in order to find out what caused the fire.
Watch Manager Sean Waters said: "It's so important that people have working smoke alarms in their homes. When you're asleep there is no other way that you'll know that a fire has started - it doesn't wake you up."
