The Oxford group of Headway was founded about 20 years ago by Reg and Sheila Sargeant and a group of dedicated volunteers, most of whom had experience of the problems caused by a brain injury.

Headway is a charity that supports people with a brain injury and those who care for them. Across the UK more than one million people attend hospital every year following a brain injury, and estimates show there are half a million people living with the long-term affects of such an injury.

Some are so severe that they need to stay in a residential home, but the vast majority of people live at home with partners or family who take on the role of carers.

There are about 100 local groups offering a wide range of services including rehabilitation, and community and respite care. They also promote the understanding of all aspects of brain injury and provide information and support to those affected and their families and carers.

Bob Wilson, treasurer of the Oxford group, said: "You will find that all involved with Headway have moving and heart-rending stories to tell.

"A brain injury is devastating. The main causes are road accidents, falls, and home or work-related accidents."

"If there was no Headway I don't know where I would be," was the comment of one recipient, while another said: "The group saved my life. I feel an emotional and intellectual connection with the people."

Headway Oxford now needs over £150,000 a year to run their service and a day centre in Kennington.

Bob said: "We have a very experienced staff, but the backbone of the work is provided by a wonderful band of volunteers. Essential support also comes from the Oxfordshire County Council, social services and the Big Lottery fund, but we still need to do a lot more fundraising.

"We have an exciting project this year to purchase a Portacabin which will serve as an art room, class for therapy and a quiet room, an essential requirement for the brain injured."

His son, David, and a college friend, Gary Olney, are cycling 8,500 miles through South America to raise £10,000 for the new building. The route goes from Tierra del Fuego to the Caribbean. For further details of their journey see the website www.southamericacycle.co.uk.
