In response to Marie-Claire Gully-Hart's letter, Attacks on pets (Oxford Mail, July 17), the RSPCA would like to reiterate the message that dogs must be kept under control in public.

Anyone found to be encouraging a dog to attack another creature, or a person who has allowed their dog to attack more than once, could face prosecution and a maximum six-month prison sentence and/or a £20,000 fine if found guilty.

In addition, a court has the power to hand out a destruction order on the animal.

All dog owners have a responsibility to their own pet and to other animals and should never use their animal as a status symbol or a weapon.

The RSPCA urges anyone who has witnessed or has information about such an attack to contact us in confidence on 0870 55 55 999.
