Sir - The article by broadcaster and writer Tim Healey in last week's Oxfordshire Limited Edition about Oxford University's Design-a-Gargoyle competition suggested the initiative was very much in the tradition of medieval gargoyles.
The gargoyles, he wrote, were often a point of contact with ordinary people'; the University would hope that the tradition should continue. We have decided to extend the closing date of the competition to October 19, 2007, rather than September 1,2007 as quoted in the article, so that many more ordinary people' get the chance to take part.
The extension of the closing date comes in response to the interest shown by schools and colleges in the competition.
We are happy to agree to their request to adopt the Design-a-Gargoyle theme as a project for the classroom or art-room during term-time.
More time will hopefully give ordinary people the chance to design something truly extraordinary for the Bodleian Library. If you are aged between eight and 18 and want to have a go, visit our website at www.ox.ac.uk/publicaffairs/gargoyles
