IS your pet dog a natural performer? Does he or she resemble Snowy from the Tintin books by Hergé? If yes, your dog could be taking the lead in Oxford's 'Bone Idol' competition.

The producers of Tintin, which will take to the stage of the Oxford Playhouse in Beaumont Street later this month, are offering the chance for a local dog to do a star turn.

All you have to do is match your canine's characteristics to that of Snowy - Tintin's faithful companion.

So if your pet is gutsy, cheeky and loveable, as well as being faithful, friendly, resourceful and obedient, it could end up on the stage.

Lisa Wood, Oxford Playhouse spokesman, said: "This is a very big show. Tickets are selling really well and to have the connection with getting local dogs involved is very exciting."

It is up to the public to vote for the dog they believe most resembles Snowy. If your dog manages to make it into the final three, you will be contacted by the producers.

The finalists will be invited to attend the press launch of the show on Tuesday, August 14, where the director and associate director will decide on the winner.

Miss Wood continued: "Bone Idol is a fun competition for local pooches and we're hoping that by next week lots of Oxfordshire dogs will have entered to be the next Bone Idol!"

A photo-call with members of the cast of Tintin, a pair of tickets to the show, a signed programme and a winner's certificate signed by the cast, will be awarded to the winner.

Runners up will also star in the photo-call, and will receive a pair of tickets to the show.

Herge's Adventures of Tintin, adapted by David Grieg and Rufus Norris, features boy reporter Tintin, Snowy and Captain Haddock, as they battle to rescue their friend Chang lost in a plane crash in the Himalayas - and hope to reach him before the Abominable Snowman does.

Snowy, a white wire-haired fox terrier, is Tintin's four-legged companion, who has rescued his master many times - often by gnawing through restraints.

He is also a bit of an occasional drinker, being fond of a drop of Loch Lomond scotch.
