THE dangers to farm animals of fly-tipped rubbish have been highlighted in BBC Radio 4 serial The Archers - with the help of Oxfordshire County Council.

In the programme, four cows died after eating fly-tipped yew branches dumped in their field. Yew is poisonous to livestock.

BBC script writers sought technical advice from waste managers at the county council.

The show's agricultural story editor, Graham Harvey, said: "We were glad to have the help of specialists at Oxfordshire in the development of this storyline."

The council's commercial waste reduction officer, Daniel Dempsey, said: "The Archers story highlights the damage that can be done by fly-tipping. I was only too happy to provide technical advice to the writers."
