JERICHO has dropped down the list of the UK’s ‘most hip’ destinations from 11th last year to 20th.

With its wealth of cafes, cocktail bars and quirky shops, TravelSupermarket once again felt the upmarket area deserved a mention in its Hip Hangout Neighbourhood Index.

But the neighbourhood dropped down the pecking order this year, losing ground in the ‘hip culture outposts’ category – which takes into account vegan cafes, independent bike shops, vinyl record stores and independent coffee shops among other hip haunts.

Jericho scored full marks again in the ‘creative capital’ category, which marks co-working and creative spaces.

But for the second year running it scored zero when it came to traveller value – savings visitors would make by staying in the area compared to the city centre.

Penalty points were subtracted for brands such as Starbucks, Costa and Pret a Manager but Jericho has not succumbed to big chains just yet.

Despite losing ground on its hipster rivals the area north of Oxford kept its place in the top 20.

Montpellier in Bristol was awarded the top spot, closely followed by Peckham, Stroud Green and Dalston, all in London.

Emma Grimster, TravelSupermarket spokesperson, commented: “After scoring the UK and Europe to find the most up and coming, independent areas, we hope the guide gives people ideas for new destinations to visit, at home or abroad.”
