FILM actress Florence Pugh was praised by Hollywood star and wrestling superstar Dwayne Johnson after winning her latest movie accolade, and was even invited to join him for a hot dog.

In 2016, Miss Pugh, 21, from Oxford, was picked out as a Breakthrough Brit by BAFTA.

Now she has been named Best Actress in British Film Industry Awards for her lead role in Lady Macbeth, which came out last year.

Following her win she tweeted her delight: "I WON. Thank you Lady Macbeth for this wonderful moment in time."

She was immediately congratulated by American wrestler and actor Dwayne Johnson, also known by his wrestling persona 'The Rock', who tweeted: "Ahhhh one of my favourite humans wins Best Actress for Lady Macbeth. We’re proud of you. Well deserved win for a phenomenal performance. Luv ya! Hot dogs on me!"

One of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time, Mr Johnson, who has 96 million followers on Instagram, has moved into the film industry and is one of the biggest draws at the box office following hit movies The Scorpion King and the upcoming remake of Jumanji.

One of his latest projects is Fighting With My Family, a film about Norwich wrestlers, The Knights, in which Miss Pugh plays WWE superstar Paige, real name Saraya-Jade Bevis.

Miss Pugh is a former pupil of Cokethorpe School near Witney and Wychwood School and St Edward's School in Oxford.

She has also won the starring role in the BBC TV adaptation of John le Carré’s spy novel The Little Drummer Girl.

She will play Charlie, a young actress who is recruited by an Israeli spy chief, and then persuaded to become a double agent.

Miss Pugh is the daughter of Oxford restaurateur Clinton Pugh and his wife Deborah.

She followed sister Arabella Gibbins, 31, and brother Toby Sebastian into the limelight.

Ms Gibbins is an actress and a singer while Mr Sebastian, 25, has appeared in TV fantasy drama Game of Thrones.

And Miss Pugh’s 13-year-old sister Rafaela has appeared in Born of War, a 2014 film directed by Vicki Jewson.

Mr Pugh, who runs restaurants in Cowley Road, said: "It has been an amazing year for Florence and Lady Macbeth has achieved a great deal, considering its budget.

"She has just finished working with Sir Anthony Hopkins on a BBC movie of King Lear and she is looking forward to The Little Drummer Girl.

"We are very close as a family and we are looking forward to everyone gathering for Christmas."

Lady Macbeth picked up five trophies at the British Independent Film Awards.

It was adapted by scriptwriter Alice Birch from Nikolai Leskov's 19th century Russian novella Lady Macbeth Of The Mtsensk, with the gripping tragedy set in rural England in 1865.

The film was directed by William Oldroyd and produced by Fodhla Cronin O'Reilly.

Filming on six-part drama The Little Drummer Girl will begin early in 2018, with master film-maker Park Chan-wook directing.

John le Carre’s 1983 novel moved through London, Mykonos, Munich, Vienna, Bonn and Tel Aviv.

Charlie’s mission is to help track down Khalil, a shadowy Palestinian terrorist mastermind.

It is not known when the drama, set in the 1970s and 1980s, will be screened.
