OXFORD United and Bradford City fans were left even more frustrated in the hours following their 2-2 draw on Tuesday night when they were hit by A34 closures.
The road was closed between Botley and Wolvercote as part of an overnight resurfacing project.
Fans hit out at the lack of information about the closures as Botley Road remained gridlocked past 10.30pm.
Responding on social media, Oxfordshire County Council leader Ian Hudspeth said it had ‘nothing to do’ with the council and was down to Highways England.
Yellows hit back demanding both sets of supporters should have been made aware of the closures before leaving the Kassam Stadium.
The away fans’ journey could have been even more miserable were it not for a last-gasp equaliser from Bradford’s Romain Vincelot.
According to Highways England there are clear diversion signs in place and the work has been going on overnight on weekdays for the past two weeks.
Overnight closures began on August 30 and are expected to continue for at least another week but will not clash with another United home game.
The road will remain closed from 10pm to 6am each weeknight from the A420 Botley Interchange to the A44 Peartree Interchange.
