FAMILIES in Northway came together for a community clean-up led by the local housing association.
On Tuesday, August 1, scores of residents in Dora Carr Close got to work clearing their area, hauling unwanted bulky household items into two skips, picking up litter and pruning overgrown shrubs.
They were supported by staff from GreenSquare Housing Association as well as Oxford City Council, which had a stall for officers to chat to residents and provide help and advice with recycling.
Food caddies and other promotional items were also handed out.
Lew Fryer, GreenSquare’s community involvement officer, said: “We were really pleased with the great turnout.
“People helped to fill two large skips with their unwanted household waste.
“In particular the event enabled us to help older residents, and residents with disabilities, who aren’t able to easily get rid of unwanted items themselves.”
One resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “I’ve had stuff for more than 25 years that I’ve been wondering how to get rid of. I’m really happy.”
For the past two weeks GreenSquare and the council have also been involved in a concerted clean-up of Greater Leys.
The latest ‘Clean Green Oxford’ campaign saw officers out in force over the course of two weeks engaging in litter-picking, cleaning the streets and talking to residents in local parks about dog fouling issues.
