A nine-year-old boy is in hospital in a serious condition after being hit by a car in Botley Road, Oxford.

The incident took place shortly before midday near the crossing near Binsey Lane and The Osney Arms guest house.

Police were called at 11.55am to reports of a collision between a pedestrian and a black Peugeot near the junction with Henry Road.

Oxford Mail:

Spokeswoman Holly Claydon-Bevan said: "The pedestrian, a nine-year-old boy, has been taken to hospital by ambulance."

She confirmed the youngster had suffered a head injury during the crash. The injuries are thought to be serious but not life-threatening.

A police cordon was lifted just before 1.30pm. No arrests have been made.

South Central Ambulance Service spokeswoman Michelle Archer said: "We got a call at 11.50am to a road traffic collision involving a young boy and a car."

The boy was treated by ambulance crews at the scene for a head injury before being taken by road to the John Radcliffe Hospital.

Botley Road resident Shah Khan, 27, said: "There was a lot of noise and screaming, the child was screaming.

"Then he was taken away by the ambulance.

"I am a father myself, I have two kids so I am going to muscle around them when I get home and make sure they are ok.

"It was the first thing I did after it happened was to ring my kids to make sure they were ok."

West Oxford Community Primary School has confirmed the youngster is not one of its pupils.

Steven Allen, 25, shop assistant at Organic Deli Cafe said he was 'shocked' at what had happened.

He said he didn't see what happened but one of his customers did: "I went out and saw there was a crowd around the child who was covered in a blanket.

"Soon after an ambulance was there and the child was taken away."

Lounes Toudef, 32, of County Grains said he heard screaming.

He added: "People were shouting and the traffic had already stopped and people were out of their cars.

"It is distressing because it's a child, that is somebody's child."

A Stagecoach bus is parked in the road and Stagecoach is helping police with enquiries through CCTV recorded on the bus.

Oxford Bus Company tweeted to say that while the situation was ongoing it will not be stopping at Oxford Railway Station. Stagecoach was diverting its services via the A34.

Both firms have now resumed normal service.

Traffic is very slow in the affected area and is queueing back to the Oxpens ice rink and West Way.
