MEN across the county are being asked to look for their inner Len Goodman as Strictly Oxford returns for its sixth year.

With a shortage of male participants, organisers Step by Step Oxford are urging potential dances to shake off the nerves and take the plunge in this year’s competition.

The main event raises funds for specialist Littlemore care home Vale House, which supports people with dementia, and is being held on Sunday, May 28.

Founder of Step by Step dance school Andrzej Mialkowski said he hoped this year’s event would be bigger and better than ever.

He said: “We’re raising more and more money for charity every year so fingers crossed this year we do the best yet.

“The event has just grown and grown since it first started. The last Strictly Oxford was sold out.

“It’s absolutely brilliant to see the show. It’s just incredible to see people being so supportive. Family members come out and bring banners – it’s great.”

He added his concern over the lack of men entering this year. The organisers have already accumulated plenty of females for this year’s competition.

Mr Mialkowski added: “We are desperate for men. They always hesitate but then absolutely love it when they take part.

“It’s dancing, but it’s also raising money for charity and a good way to exercise.”

The event, which has raised more than £150,000 for Vale House, will this year will have a 'Night at the Movies' theme. The show will offer a total of 24 'personalities' the opportunity to learn how to dance an American smooth waltz and a jive routine in just eight weeks, concluding with a performance at the Oxford New Theatre in front of family and friends.

Each contestant for Strictly Oxford is required to raise funds in sponsorship.

Last year’s competition, which is based on the hit BBC competition Strictly Come Dancing, was won by Dan Bond, head of performance and analysis at Oxford Utd.

Organisers still need to find 12 men for this year's event.
