An Oxford teenager who has battled cancer for three years is preparing for a new challenge.

Jake Spicer, 13, from Shepherds Hill in Greater Leys, has been through numerous hospital operations to tackle cancer in his legs and head which have often left him housebound.

He planned a sponsored walk, cycle and swim in April - but he had to pull out at the last minute after having to return to hospital to have metal pins put in his knee.

Now the youngster is back on his feet and has pledged to complete the challenge he first set himself.

He said: "I'm working harder than I have ever done before.

"I'm definitely going to do it this time, and if I can it will be a great honour.

"Everything is a bit painful but I want to get through the pain more than anything.

"It will mean so much to me to do it and for the people I am getting donations for."

Jake has been having hydrotherapy and physiotherapy to ensure he is fit for the big day.

On Saturday, the St Gregory's School pupil aims to walk 10 times round the pitch at Oxford United Football Club.

He will then cycle a mile and a half to Blackbird Leys Swimming Pool to finish off the day of challenges with 15 lengths.

When Jake was nine he started suffering pain in his right leg. Doctors at first thought it was a hamstring problem caused by hours playing football.

But when the pain increased they discovered a tumour had developed on his right femur.

Since then doctors have treated two tumours in his head and he has needed corrective surgery to ensure his legs grow properly.

He has also had treatment for potential cancer sites on his spine and pelvis.

Over the past three years he has received radiotherapy to each leg and his head and had nine courses of chemotherapy .

In the last 18 months, Jake has been in and out of hospital.

He has often been confined to home or dependent on crutches to get about.

All the money raised will go to charities Clic, which helps child sufferers of cancer, and SeeSaw, the Oxfordshire support agency for bereaved children.
