Dorothy Green, who has died aged 86, spent much of her life doing voluntary work and benefiting others.

She was chairman of the New Marston 50-Plus Club, which provides weekly activities for up to 50 members at the Pastoral Centre at Marston Road, Oxford.

For many years, she was secretary of the League of Friends at the former Rivermead Rehabilitation Centre, off Abingdon Road, Oxford.

She was an Oxford city councillor, representing Marston ward, from 1969-72, with a special interest in helping the elderly.

As chairman of governors at Northway Middle School, she fought a spirited but unsuccessful campaign for a new school, following a merger with Harlow School, to be at Northway rather than Old Marston.

She was also a member of the management board of the Oxford Citizens' Housing Association and chairman of its residents' panel.

Andrew Smith, the association's operations director, said: "She was involved with us for 12 years and was the most amazing woman."

Another of her interests was lacemaking, and she often demonstrated her skills as a member of Isis Lacemakers.

Mrs Green was born at Griffithstown, near Pontypool, South Wales, and moved to Oxford when her husband, Ted, was transferred to the District Valuer's offices in Marston Road.

After his death in 1963, she worked there as office manager.

Mrs Green, who lived at Rayson House in Eden Drive, Headington, leaves a daughter Lyn Jeffrey, three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

The funeral at St Michael and All Angels Church in Marston Road on Tuesday, attracted a large congregation.
