Oxford commuters say a revised railway timetable due to be introduced in December will not meet passengers' needs.

Commuter pressure group OxRail Action met executives from rail operator First Great Western last week to discuss the proposed changes - and said none of the issues they had raised had been dealt with.

Spokesman Susan Westlake said: "We want to express our concern that it's not what we want.

"There are major problems, particularly with the early part of the day, between 6.30am and 7.30am, when there is a distinct lack of trains.

"There is only one small train going during that period.

"Although that may change, as the timetable is only provisional, we're really worried they haven't taken our concerns on board.

"One of the main ones was the 7.05am train, our key morning train, was severely overcrowded - and the new timetable doesn't do anything to change that."

Miss Westlake said of the first four trains in the morning, only one was a larger capacity, InterCity 125 High Speed Train - and that wasn't good enough.

She added: "It's just really frustrating, because we specified ages ago that was one of our main problems and that was one of the key times of the day.

"They have known our concerns for a long time and they know what times of day are busiest and which trains are overcrowded."

Members of the group also met Transport Secretary Douglas Alexander on Monday to discuss problems with rail services from Oxford and Miss Westlake said they had received a positive response.

She said Mr Alexander promised to bring up their concerns at a meeting with Moir Lockhead, the chief executive of First Group, FGW's parent company.

Miss Westlake said: "He knew already about our campaign, but it was good to be able to tell him face to face about our worries for the December timetable.

"It's definitely good to be consulted and it's the first time this has happened.

"We're also hoping that what we said in the meeting on Friday will also push them to do something about that gap."

FGW spokesman Adrian Booth said: "We have had early discussions with the OxRail Action Group.

"We were not presenting the final timetable, these were merely early discuss- ions.

"We are still looking at the areas of the timetable that they indicated they would like to see strengthened and the work continues on that.

"Train operating companies like ourselves have to put in a bid to Network Rail and it is a very busy line indeed.

"We are not the only operator, so it really has to be a balance of resources and available space."
