MCLAREN driver Lewis Hamilton today became the first British driver to win in F1 in the United States for 24 years when he won the US GP in Indianapolis.

Hamilton, 22, stretched his lead in the drivers' world championship to ten points clear of his team-mate, double world champion Fernando Alonso who finished second, one and a half seconds behind.

Hamilton thanked both the team at home and at the track for "doing such a fantastic job with the car".

He said: "It is the perfect team and I am just happy that I can put the icing on the cake."

The Ferraris of Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen were third and fourth.

The best finisher for Oxfordshire's teams was Heikki Kovalainen, who was fifth in the Enstone-built ING Renault.

His team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella was ninth, ahead of Alexander Wurz in the Grove-built Williams-Toyota and Anthony Davidson in the Leafield-built Super Aguri. Jenson Button was 12th in the Brackley-built Honda.

The non-finishers included Rubens Barrichello for the Brackley-based Honda team who went out after a first lap crash and Takuma Sato, whose Leafield-built Super Aguri spun out.

Nico Rosberg went out in the Grove-built Williams-Toyota with just four laps to go while in a points-scoring position.
