ALMOST 40 motorists were pulled over for not wearing their seatbelts in a traffic blitz in Oxford last night.

Police held a two-hour operation in Botley Road from 7pm on Friday and stopped 37 people for not belting up.

Officers said they were disappointed at the number, however there was some pleasing news.

Police were also targeting motorists who may have had a few drinks after work, but not one of the 70 people breathalysed was over the limit.

Three people were given £60 fines for using their mobile phones without a hands-free kit.

Police said they believed that showed the message was getting through about the dangers of mobiles, almost four months after tougher penalties were brought in.

Two people were cautioned for possession of cannabis and there were several motorists given warnings and ordered to get their lights or other minor mechanical problems fixed.
