OXFORD United have been given the go-ahead to built a temporary fourth stand at the Kassam Stadium.
Oxford City Council granted planning permission to build the 735-seat stand.
But the buck still stops with stadium owner Firoz Kassam on whether the structure will be built any time soon.
Previous talks between the club and Mr Kassam have failed to end in agreement.
It was hoped the stand would have been erected in time for Saturday's derby clash against Swindon Town - which was sold out.
Kemp & Kemp planning partner Huw Mellor, who is operating as an agent for the club, said "as a football fan" he was "genuinely pleased" with the result.
He added: "We worked closely with the football club from the outset, to understand their needs for the extra spectator accommodation and to ensure that the planning application was presented to the city council in the best shape it could be.
"We now wish the club all the very best in its attempt to climb out of League One this season."
