Sir - Last weekend, following Richard Hunt's appeal (Letters, June 8) to test the public opinion about the introduction of the parking zone in North Summertown, the residents of five further streets (Wentworth Road, Carlton Road, Salisbury Crescent, Southdale Road, and Cavendish Road) conducted their own survey collecting signatures against the zone.
The results will make uncomfortable reading for the county council, which is pressing ahead with the implementation of the scheme this summer.
There is an clear majority against the zone in five surveyed streets, with Carlton Roadd recording nearly 88 per cent of the households against and 12 per cent for the scheme among 63 per cent of the households which responded (the last figure is similar to the 2005 General election turn-out in our constituency). We will join the streets in Mr Hunts area in order to present the petition against the zone together at the county council meeting on June 19.
Our survey demonstrates that the opposition to the scheme does not concentrate in isolated pockets on the outside of the proposed zone, but exists right across the designated area, even in places close to public transport and amongst households with drives.
There is still time for the council to listen to the residents of North Summertown and abandon the scheme or delay it until they have the public on board.
