POLICE are still hunting for a man who assaulted another man with a metal pole in Blackbird Leys landing him in hospital.

Officers were called out on Tuesday night to deal with a fight between two groups of people in which one man was reportedly brandishing a gun.

Officers are now still hunting for a man from the scene who is described as white with light brown hair, in his mid-twenties, wearing a blue hooded top, grey tracksuit bottoms and black trainers.

Senior investigating officer Det Insp Mike Roddy, of Abingdon Force CID said the force had "increased patrols" in the area this afternoon "to provide reassurance to the community" and carry out more enquiries.

Residents were alarmed when police armed with guns swooped on the area on Tuesday night and closed two roads - Peregrine Road and Merlin Road - between 8pm and 10pm.

Merlin Road resident John Smith said: "I saw three police cars go past at about 7.30pm on Tuesday night.

"It is unusual to see that many go by here.

"There is never normally any trouble around here."

Another resident, who did not wish to be named, said he had seen a grey Vauxhall Zafira in the street with its back window smashed in.

Somebody who lives in the area said: “I couldn’t get anywhere near my house, there were armed police everywhere.”
