Proposals to introduce residents' only parking at the same time as Bicester's town centre redevelopment will cause "utter chaos", a councillor has warned.

Cherwell District Council has completed consultation on plans to introduce a residents' parking scheme in six town centre streets.

But town and district councillor Les Sibley has urged his colleagues to think again, claiming it will result in fewer free spaces more congestion, and more hazardous driving.

Under the plans, householders in Victoria Road, Priory Road, North Street, Kings End, Henley Gardens and Church Lane will be eligible to apply for permits.

Mr Sibley said he was concerned about safety in Victoria Road because the proposed spaces were close to sharp bends.

And he said the plans to use Claremont car park as a replacement for the Bure Place car parks while the town centre was redeveloped would make matters worse.

He said: "Plans to use these facilities as part of the town centre redevelopment proposals is a recipe for utter chaos."

He said residents in Victoria Road should be given permits to park in the Cattle Market car park instead of on the street.

But George Reynolds, Cherwell's community portfolio holder, said the concerns had already been looked at and the options chosen were considered "adequate and safe."

Cherwell District Council angered many residents last summer when it suggested permits could cost up to £200 a year.

Following opposition from residents it reduced the proposed charge to £50.

Both Cherwell District and Oxfordshire County Councils are now due to consider the responses to the consultation.
