NEIGHBOURS in Oxford pitted themselves against each other by putting up pro-Brexit and pro-remain displays within a few doors of each other.

The Botley Road residents slapped up signs and stickers to persuade passers-by to vote their way in the EU referendum.

David Shorter, 59, covered the outside of his flat with pro-Brexit signs screaming "Little England is full" and "Toot for out" and plastered his windows with newspaper cuttings plugging the Vote Leave campaign.

He said: "I'm a traditionalist, I am passionate about my country.

"The signs rattled a few cages. I wanted to put up a few home truths - we have got to control our borders. We are full. If you secure borders we can plan for education and healthcare."

His display prompted neighbours further down the road, Heather and Adrian Rosser, to put up a rival display.

Retired teacher Mr Rosser, 67, said: "I thought, 'I can do better than that'. People were waving and cheering and tooting when we were putting it up.

"Already the pound has dropped in value and it will drop further. We need immigration, we are not producing sufficient people to keep our country going.

"If you are in a club and don't like what's going on, you work in the club to change things. If you leave the club you have no influence whatsoever."

Author Mrs Rosser, 71, added: "If the Brexit wins I will be incredibly sad and embarrassed."
