FIREFIGHTERS rescued a man from a three-metre deep shaft inside an Oxford college today.

The specialist rescue team from Kidlington was called to Brasenose College, at 3.30pm today to get the man out of the shaft, which was an access to a basement boiler room.

The man is believed to have been going down a ladder into the shaft while carrying a toolbox and lost his balance, falling and injuring his leg.

He had to be removed from the two-metre square hole using rescue gear, after ambulance staff put a splint on his leg.

He was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, with injuries which are not thought to be serious.
