A staff member at Oxford Brookes University needed hospital treatment after being attacked near a campus toilet block.

The woman, who is understood to be a teacher, was assaulted on the university's Harcourt Hill campus in North Hinksey, on Tuesday morning. She was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital for treatment and released later that day.

The university is reviewing its security arrangements following the incident.

University Vice-chancellor Prof Graham Upton said: "I am deeply shocked by this assault.

"My immediate concern now is for our staff member and we are ensuring she receives all the support she needs.

"I am also urging any member of our staff or student body with any information on this assault to immediately come forward and contact the police.

"We are now, with the police, reviewing security arrangements."

He added: "The safety of our staff and students is paramount and as a university we will take the strongest action possible against anyone who threatens a safe campus environment, in addition to any criminal prosecution."

Thames Valley Police spokesman Toby Shergold confirmed that an assault at the university had been reported and was being investigated by police officers.
