Drivers going the wrong way up a one way road in Oxford are endangering lives, neighbours have claimed.

Jean Barnes, 73, of Stile Road, Headington, has become increasingly worried about the number of cars ignoring one way road signs in the street, which is two-way from London Road to allow access to the Co-op supermarket, but becomes one-way towards St Leonard's Road.

In the course of an hour on Saturday, the Oxford Mail spotted seven drivers ignoring the one-way signs.

Mrs Barnes said: "I think drivers are idiots for going down the road the wrong way, it's so dangerous.

"It won't be long before there is an accident and then the county council might pay attention, but something should be done before that happens.

"If the council was to install a camera along Stile Road to catch people out, it would make a lot of money."

Dr Tia MacGregor, councillor for Quarry and Risinghurst, said: "A couple of residents contacted me about what has been going on and I went down and saw cars ignoring the road signs for myself.

"It's a confusing road as it's two way until a certain point and then after that it becomes a one way.

"I think that better signage is required, or maybe revising the one way system along that road completely.

"There's a real danger to people who know the street and cross expecting it to be one way. It's only a matter of time before someone gets hurt."

Oxfordshire County Council insisted there was not a problem. Senior highways technician Steve Walker said: "The signs are perfectly clear to motorists. This is an enforcement matter for the police."

Thames Valley Police spokesman Toby Shergold said: "Our neighbourhood team have not been made aware of this issue or received an official report from a member of the public.

"However, if someone wished to contact Pc Chris Miles, the neighbourhood specialist officer for Headington, he would be more than willing to look into this issue."

Any motorists caught driving the wrong way down a one-way road can be issued with a fixed penalty notice of £60 and have three points added to their licence.

Pc Chris Miles can be called via the Police Enquiry Centre on 0845 8505505.
