Some will question the value of a seminar in Oxford on climate change.
What possible influence can a city of 135,000 people have on a world with a population of billions?
Not a lot, probably. But of course it is important that we all play our part.
That is why Climate Change Oxford, What you can do now, promoted by Oxford City Council at the Town Hall yesterday, was of such importance.
Some experts have argued that there is no such thing as climate change - it is a just a natural phenomenon which has occurred many times in centuries past.
But even if they are all wrong, the world will be a much better and healthier place if we take greater care of our environment.
The human race has done much to pollute and ruin the planet.
Now is the time to stop our bad habits and start afresh.
However small and insignificant our individual contributions might be, they will multiply when put together with those of others.
We owe it to ourselves and to future generations to act now.
