YOUNG footballers from Gosford Hill School are celebrating after coming out on top in a national competition.

The school's under 15's boys team completed a thrilling 6-3 victory over Yorkshire's Howden School on Monday to win the English Schools’ FA PlayStation Small Schools’ trophy.

The goal-filled game was played at Reading FC's Madejski Stadium, with three coaches filled with students bought down to cheer on the team.

Head of PE, and team coach Peter Green said: "It was a fantastic experience for everybody.

"We knew the final could go either way but we were still confident with the players we've got.

"The boys were absolutely ecstatic and I know everyone at the school was really proud.

"As a coach I'm really pleased as well but of course it's all about the team."

The Kidlington lads got their hands on the trophy after a hattrick from Jonah Clarke, and further goals from captain Piers Walton, Jamie Hudson and Harley Firkin.

The team hung on despite late goals from Howden's Cameron Taylor, who got two, and Toms Vickops.

Next week the school will hold a special assembly with parents invited in to celebrate the team's achievements.
