ABOUT 40 small holes - some a foot deep - were discovered dug in the square on Hanney Cricket Club's ground, off The Brookside, East Hanney, yesterday.
Club captain David Johns said someone with a grudge could be responsible.
He said: "Someone's obviously taken some time digging them because they are quite substantial."
He said he hoped the pitch would be back in action ready for Saturday's game. Police are investigating.
