A "substantial" quantity of lead has been stolen from the roof of St Andrew's Church in Kingham, West Oxfordshire.
In the early hours of Friday morning thieves stripped the lead from the roof of the building in Church Street.
PC Darren Hall, from Chipping Norton police station, said: "This crime will have a lasting impact on the church and local community.
"I would urge anyone who becomes aware of a large quantify of lead for sale to get in touch. Thankfully all this lead has been security marked and will therefore be traceable."
Anyone with information should contact PC Hall via the 101 number.
