The Chain Saw Massacre takes on a whole new meaning if you go down to the woods today.

Brasenose Wood at Headington, Oxford, is looking particularly 'hacked off' and the devastation of certain areas is shocking.

I am confident, however, that the park rangers know what they are doing and, in this case, have the best interests of the wood at heart.

It is saddening when mature trees are felled, but bluebells and wildlife are quick to move on to the more accessible spaces.

It is more frustrating to see well-loved mature trees in the city going and the lack of trees, particularly in Cornmarket Street, which makes an environment appear sterile and unwelcoming.

No doubt the recently reported 'under-used' parks have already been earmarked for buildings, but surely the quality of life of those already living in the area should be paramount and they might see the space being put to other uses.

The answer, then, is to either "listen up" or "speak up".
