POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a 22-year-old man was stabbed in Wantage.

At about 1am yesterday while driving on a regular patrol in Mill Street, an officer discovered a man who had been stabbed. An ambulance was called and he was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital.

He had surgery for three stab wounds to his lower torso and is now in a serious but stable condition.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested and is in custody in Abingdon, being questioned by detectives.

Det Insp Paul Miller said: "Our investigations are at an early stage and it isn't clear yet what exactly happened in this incident.

"We are very keen to speak to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in Mill Street. It's believed there were a number of other people in the Mill Street area at the time and we hope someone may have seen something."
