SHOPPERS surrounded a robber with a replica gun and stopped him getting away from a Banbury supermarket after he held up one of the cashiers.

The robber walked into the Morrisons store, in Swan Close Road, shortly after midday yesterday with the replica gun and stole £365 from one of the tills.

But shoppers saw the incident and stopped the man from leaving the store.

Police officers arrived shortly afterwards and arrested the man, who was today being interviewed by detectives in Banbury.

Rebecca Webber, a spokesman for Thames Valley Police, said: "At 12.10pm, someone entered the store with a replica gun and approached the cashier before taking £365 from the till.

"As he was trying to leave the store, shoppers detained him until police arrived."

Paul White, duty manager at the Morrisons store, declined to comment.
