IS IT a bird? is it a plane? No it is your takeaway curry being delivered by drone.

Soon the skies across the dreaming spires will be dotted with drones being used to deliver dinners from an East Oxford Indian restaurant.

Qumins Indian Cuisine, St Clements Street, has launched the new-style delivery service Curry by Drone to combat the city's congestion.

Staff and customers at the family-run business have put together a promotional video to show their customers exactly what to expect.

Mr Burhan Azam, 23, who helps his dad Ali Azam working at the restaurant, said: "One of the ladies at the restaurant is a bit of a film producer and we got talking about drones and thought why not deliver by drone.

"It is more eco-friendly, especially in Oxford. Doing it by drone will help with the traffic in Oxford and pollution.

"We thought we would do the video to show what people can expect, it was a small project and done in different stages."

The video shows how customers can order their korma, rice and naan and see it take a birds-eye tour of the city as it makes it way direct to your front door.

On the video, owner Mr Ali Azam, 51, said "Amazon are doing it so why not move with the times?" and labelled it "the future".

Customers will ring through their orders as normal but can ask for delivery by drone.

Their food will then be packaged up and flown to its destination as shown in the video.

Staff will use an app to programme the drone to its destination before attaching the food for take off.

Mr Burhan Jnr, who also works as an Oxford Brookes University finance systems analyst, added: "Customers of ours, when we have taken their orders over the phone, we asked if they wanted to trial the takeaway by drone for the film.

"It took us about a month to put the film together working on it as and when we could.

"It is something we thought we would like to do because you have got to move forward with the times."

Qumins restaurant has been at its East Oxford address for 11 years and is a family business run by Mr Azam snr, with the help of Mr Azam jnr and brother Hamza Azam, 25.

The restaurant said it has been delivering takeaways since 1993 and it was one of the first to do takeaway deliveries in those days.

Now it hopes to become the first to take on Curry by Drone and provide a new, modern service that will deliver takeaways quicker and be more economical.

As part of the launch, customers will be given 10 per cent off if they ask for takeaway delivery by drone.
