Women are being urged to get on their bikes this weekend as part of a scheme to get more women on two wheels.

The Five Miles to Fabulous rides are taking place at scores of places around the country, with an Oxford event running from Cowley Road on Sunday following some of the city's most picturesque cycle paths.

The route involves a gentle five-mile ride on traffic-free or quiet lanes. There are also rides at Grove on Saturday and at Thame on Sunday.

Organiser Bex Hopkins said: "The rides are aimed at women who haven't cycled for years and either lack the confidence or need a motivator to help them get back on the bike. The rides will be friendly, sociable and supportive and led by a more experienced cyclist who can give advice, encouragement and develop skills. It's all just about getting out on the bike and enjoying cycling."

She added: "If it's been a while since you last used a bike, don't worry as lots of other people will be in the same boat on the day.

"All you need is a bike that works, a drink and a snack. The ride is not competitive - it's all about having fun while getting fit. If, however, you're reading this and do hundreds of miles a week on your bike, don't think this isn't for you. This is the perfect opportunity to come along and get your friends into cycling."

Women wishing to join the Oxford ride should meet behind the Cowley Road Tesco's, on the corner of the cycle path and Union Street at 10.30am. On arrival they will be met by a ride leader who will highlight some basic skills before setting off.

The Oxford route will go along back streets through St Clement's before heading to Summertown for refreshments.

The ride will skirt the University Parks before returning to Union Street.

For the Grove ride, meet at the Old Mill Hall car park at 2pm on Saturday, while for the Thame ride, meet at the Phoenix Trail at noon on Sunday.

To join any of the rides, which are free, or for mor information, email events@ctc.org.uk or call 01865 247791.
