Sir - Simon Jones (Letters, May 18) suggests cyclists should be warned "that pedestrians only use the pavements". The trouble is that pedestrians use the roads as well and often with reckless abandon. They weave around cars to cross the road wherever they please, ignoring the many pedestrian crossings provided for their use.
This is called jaywalking in the US and is an offence.
If this were a crime in the UK, then pedestrians might think twice before risking their lives and those of other road users.
Occasionally, hoards of pedestrians block whole roads - New Inn Hall Street on a Saturday, for instance. So let all non-motorised road users pool resources because it is time to curb the motor traffic. Drivers should respect pedestrians and cyclists as they already respect horses. Cyclists should be able to use roads and feel safe using them and pavements should be for pedestrians only.
