Sir - I cycle in Oxford or London on an almost daily basis. I am not one of those cyclists who holds it as a point of honour to disobey traffic laws; I do not jump red lights and do not seek to defend those who do.
However, I am concerned at the note of congratulation being sounded after the police operation on the corner of Broad Street. This sort of action goes very little way to making cycling safer or more appealing. More should be done to deal with poor road design, inadequate road maintenance and unsafe driving.
We seem to be moving to a situation where cycling is automatically seen as an unsafe and menacing way of getting around, one where the car should always rule.
As a society, we should be able to do better; in Oxford we should be able to lead the way.
