Oxford City Council's decision to inspect all 32,000 trees in Oxford is a sensible move.

It may be a costly and lengthy exercise, but we cannot afford to take chances with people's lives.

We have already had one tragic accident in Oxford, and we don't want any more.

But we are pleased to hear that the emphasis will be on remedial work rather than felling.

The council was widely criticised when it felled an attractive line of trees along the Thames at Osney, arguing that they were a public danger.

There were claims that the council had acted too hastily and that at least some of the trees could have been saved.

The council appears to have learned from the experience.
