Fierce Vision is a fitting title for this impressive show, by the artist David Tress, at the Brian Sinfield Gallery in Burford. The ferocity is in the making: the vision is of raw beauty. Paint is applied to paper with an energy and passion that almost destroys it. The violence of his techniques in mixed media matches his vision of the awesome power of nature. Whether he is painting snow showers, rainbows, the dawn, waves crashing on rocks or heat over stubble fields it is expressed with a tactile empathy. His images of churches, from Malmesbury Abbey (pictured) to Llanwnda, remind me of the atmospheric works of John Piper.

Although the artist was born in London, his family roots are Welsh. He has lived and worked in Wales since 1976 and taught the history of art at Aberystwyth. He must have a devoted following in his homeland, for despite his success in London's Boundary Gallery, the majority of his solo exhibitions have been in Wales. His work is also well represented in national collections.

Brian Sinfield told me why he was keen to introduce us to this artist. "What attracted me to David Tress's work was its sheer power, dynamism and energy. Tress is an instinctive painter, yet at the same time one who plans each painting with great care. He draws beautifully, as his monochrome drawings show, and beneath each painting is a carefully worked out drawing - a structure on which to hang the finished work. This is exemplified in his churches and other buildings - solid structures energised and made to come alive. Tress has been around for a long time, but his work, though critically acclaimed, is relatively little known outside Wales. He paints and exhibits in London, France and Ireland, yet his inspiration springs essentially from the wild landscape of Wales."

Brian seems to have an unfailing eye for talent. The exhibition begins on Sunday and continues until Saturday, June 16.
