A burglar is thought to have broken into six homes in one day.

In each of the burglaries in west Oxfordshire, an offender got in through a door or ground-floor window and stole items, mainly jewellery. Detectives believe the incidents are linked.

Police have appealed for information about a man seen in the area on Thursday about the time the burglaries were thought to have occurred.

He was described as white, in his 40s or 50s, tall, stocky, carrying a green carrier bag, wearing a navy blue top, blue jeans and a white sailing-style peaked cap.

Det Sgt Craig Kirby, of Witney police, said: "I hope someone will have seen a suspicious individual hanging around a day or two beforehand, or on Thursday itself.

"We are linking all these burglaries and I hope that members of the public will help us by coming forward with information that might be relevant."

The burglaries took place on Thursday in Park Lane and Main Road, in Long Hanborough; Woodstock Road, Witney Road and Wroslyn Road in Witney; and The Tennis, Cassington.

Anyone with information should call Det Sgt Kirby on 08458 505505 or to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and released on bail.
