Drinkers who passed through a metal detector to get into an Oxford pub proved to be knife-free.

Police placed the device, known as a knife-arch, outside the entrance to the Bullnose Morris pub, in Blackbird Leys, on Friday.

It was the first test of its kind in the city, although the arches have previously been put outside nightspots in Henley, Bicester and Banbury. About 300 regulars entered the pub during the evening and no-one was found to be in possession of a blade or a knife.

Neighbourhood Officer Pc Alex Shepherd said the reaction from drinkers was good and the scheme was backed by landlord Dave Harrison-Steele.

One man was cautioned for possession of a class C drug, after being searched at the pub entrance.
