A woman is recovering in hospital after a crash on Oxford's Eastern Bypass.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision between a car and a motorcycle on Saturday morning between the Headington roundabout and the Horspath Driftway junction.

A 49-year-old woman motorcyclist was taken to hospital following the incident at around 8am.

Police said her injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

James Clements, a spokesman for Thames Valley Police, said: "The woman is in a serious but stable condition in hospital."

Police closed the southbound carriageway between the two junctions while they carried out an investigation. The stretch reopened shortly before midday.

The incident caused traffic snarl-ups around the area, with motorists diverted off the bypass.

The accident happened almost exactly two years after the death of 13-year-olds Marshall Haynes, Liam Hastings and Josh Bartlett and 21-year-old student Howard Hillsdon on the bypass.

Sgt Jack Hawkins, of the Bicester traffic police unit, said: "I hope people who would have seen the collision will come forward.

"We would like to know what happened in the moments leading up to the collision between the two vehicles."

A 39-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and has been released on police bail until Tuesday, June 26.

Neither vehicle hit the central reservation barrier which was installed following the crash two years ago.

The speed on the bypass was also lowered to 50mph.

A police spokesman said crash investigators were not expected to speak to the injured motorcyclist until after the weekend.

Officers spoke to drivers at the scene and are expected to collect further statements.

Witnesses should call 08458 505505.
