I READ your article (February 1) about a young couple, Jack Leahy and Madeleine Lott, arranging to travel to the Calais “Jungle” camp to help migrants and so-called refugees there.
It strikes me that this couple are from well-off, middle-class backgrounds intent on a mission of compassion borne out of pictures and footage they have seen on TV and the internet.
Fine, they are two more of the many thousands I am sure who have been bombarded with pictures of suffering children and huddled masses trying to get to Europe, and persuaded to do their bit.
However, I for one – and I’m sure there are many others – am sick and tired of interfering do-gooders such as these people who pander to the ‘hype’ and go all the way to places like Calais to help what amounts to mostly economic migrants who, if they were anything like genuine, would not be causing mayhem at that port and destroying people’s livelihoods (road hauliers, small business people etc) by attacking vehicles and people and cutting through security fences.
I’m afraid Mr Leahy and Miss Lott are extremely naive and helping to confuse and aggravate the issue of mass immigration.
Syrian refugees and other genuine refugees should be helped in the first countries of embarkation, not all over Europe.
Maybe Mr Leahy and Miss Lott could do more to serve some of our own hapless and deprived people in this country rather than travel to Peru and France.
Please think again.
