American businessman Thomas Guerriero arrived to become a director of Oxford City FC in April 2013.

Shortly after his arrival, the Florida-based businessman said he would be at the club for the next 30 years to implement his plan.

In October 2013, he acquired Oxford Hoops basketball club and renamed it Oxford City Hoops.

In early 2014, he was forced to abandon plans to open an Oxford City-branded university in the United States after the University of Oxford said that it was “monitoring” his proposals.

He had wanted to open Oxford City University in Florida in 2016, but he then decided to change its name to City Institute of Technology.

He told the Oxford Mail at the time: “They are getting their panties in a bunch.”

In March 2014, he revealed his intentions of bringing more local sports teams – including Oxford United and ice hockey team Oxford City Stars – under his business umbrella.

He also expressed interest in buying Oxford Stadium and continue to use it for speedway and greyhound racing.

The 39-year-old also said he wanted to copy Barcelona and AC Milan and expand Oxford City to include handball, basketball and hockey teams.

In June of that year, the Oxford City brand expanded further as Guerriero launched two indoor football clubs in the United States.

The franchises in South Florida and South Dakota both took the Oxford City name and he said it would spread brand awareness around the world and bring in sponsorship money.
