An explosive performance lit up the city sky on Saturday as thousands turned out to watch this year's Oxford Fireworks.

Crowds clapped and cheered through the jam-packed 25 minutes of fireworks over South Park.

Organisers The Oxford Round table predicted the event - now in its 48th year - could have drawn in more than last year's 20,000 crowd but numbers had not yet been totalled.

Trika Rampersand, 25, from North Oxford said: "It is my first time as we thought we would bring along our little girl.

"It has been awesome. There were lots of fireworks and they were just amazing, the effort the organisers have gone to is pretty good."

Revellers enjoyed fair ground rides, food stalls, bands and entertainment from the main stage.

Taking centre stage to round off the evening was the 50ft bonfire following the fireworks.

Out-going event organiser Christian Petersen said the event is now more of a tradition than ever for the city as he steps down after six years in the role.

He said: "I feel like I am leaving a city tradition for Oxford Fireworks.

"We have had really difficult build up with the weather, but thanks to the fantastic work or an army of volunteers and fellow round tablers it has been great.

"It could be a record turn out but until the final numbers come in I couldn't say.

"They were just fantastic fireworks from Kimbolton Fireworks, which has stayed with us since the beginning through its success at the 2012 London Olympic Games display. The support from all the local people as well has just been brilliant."

Stepping in as organiser is Matthew Balaam for the event which raises money for county charities.

Elsewhere in the county crowds enjoyed an aray of fireworks at The Bicester Round Table's event in Pingle Field, Bicester, with a host of food stalls and fairground rides also on hand for families.

Witney's skies were lit up above the Old Swan and Minster Mill in aid of Special Effect - which supports people with disabilities.

The 2nd Abindgon Scouts firework show was held at the Long Furlong Community Centre and at Loyd Recreation Park in Didcot crowds enjoyed the annual charity fireworks spectacular, bonfire and fun fair.
