Staff and pupils at a north Oxfordshire village school are celebrating after inspectors rated it outstanding in all areas.

Government education watchdog Ofsted praised Dr Radcliffe's Primary School, in Steeple Aston, for its positive ethos, academic progress and cultural and creative opportunities.

The inspector's report said: "For several years the results of National Curriculum assessments and tests have been above or well above average.

"All the subjects that are required to be taught, together with modern foreign languages, are given appropriate emphasis in an outstandingly well-planned curriculum that exploits the links between subjects and promotes creativity and enjoy- ment."

It added: "The pupils are looked after and cared for exceptionally well."

The inspector, who visited last month, also praised headteacher Penny Heptonstall for her "outstanding leadership".

Deputy headteacher Guy Brigg said: "It was a very intensive process. We were amazed with the level of detail the inspector went into. We felt he had validated what we felt about the school for a long time.

"We felt that we're an excellent school and that everybody had a huge amount of commitment to providing the best quality for the children.

"We had such an overwhelmingly positive response from our parent body - really lovely comments were written in."

The 190-pupil school, in Fir Lane, was founded in 1640 by Dr Samuel Radcliffe, the the rector of Steeple Aston and principal of Brasenose College, Oxford.
