Two police officers were injured while arresting an escaped prisoner at Oxford railway station last night.

Shaun Hewitt, 29, jailed for robbery and aggravated vehicle taking, escaped through a toilet window at the Churchill Hospital, in Headington, Oxford, yesterday morning. He was being treated in the infectious diseases unit.

The prisoner was captured by police at the railway station at about 8pm.

Thames Valley Police spokesman Victoria Bartlett said: "A woman police officer is believed to have been bitten during the arrest and another Pc, a male officer, broke a bone in his hand. Both officers are now receiving treatment."

Ms Bartlett added that Hewitt was arrested on suspicion of assaulting two police officers and for escaping from lawful custody. He will be interviewed at a later date.

Hewitt is being taken back to hospital to continue his treatment and will then return to prison.

Hewitt was given a four-year sentence in 2003 and released on licence in January, but he did not stick to the condition that he stay at a bail hostel, and was arrested at a girlfriend's home in Drayman's Walk, Abingdon, on Tuesday.

Police have refused to say what Hewitt is suffering from.
