Police now believe a second car was travelling with a car that smashed through a primary school fence and narrowly missed several children.

However the force yesterday refused to say if officers were investigating if the cars were racing.

Children scattered at Pegasus School in Blackbird Leys, Oxford, after the silver Fiat Punto left Pegasus Road, crashed through the fence and hit a tree on Tuesday. Seven children were sat on a nearby bench.

Witnesses at the scene reported that the car was travelling with another. But initially police said no other vehicle was travelling with the Punto.

Spokesman Toby Shergold said the driver hit a speed bump and lost control.

Parents had reported hearing car noises from some distance away prior to the crash.

Mr Shergold refused to confirm whether or not they believed the cars were racing. He added: "We are investigating the incident, we're talking to witnesses and we will act on witness statements and that may include claims that they were racing."

Neither the driver or passenger in the Fiat were hurt.
